Rotarians, Rotaract members, school children, parents as well as polio victims carried out a sensitization programme in celebration of the World Polio Day and to end polio in Nigeria.
The event tagged: “Walk a-thon … walking to end polio now”, was flagged off by the District Governor, Rotary International, District 9110 comprising Lagos and Ogun States, Dr. Dele Balogun. The awareness walk commenced from the National Stadium down to Fadeyi with a U-turn to Iganmu and back to the National Stadium.
In an interview with Dr Dele Balogun, he said “It has been a successful walk spanning about 25 killometres and we can see the age group that were involved made up of primary, secondary and post-secondary school children as well as parents. It was a very good opportunity to sensitize the people of the prevalence of polio, but the end game has started. We will get rid of polio in Nigeria. It has been a long time fight that started 25 years ago and we are getting to the tail end of it. We want Nigerians to know. Polio survivors were part of the campaign today. My advice to parents is that they should continue to immunize their children against polio until Nigeria is certified free by the World Health Organization (WHO).”
