Nigeria has emerged overall winners of the ITF Central and West Africa Junior Circuit which ended in Togo at the weekend. Nigeria topped the medals table with three gold, two silver and one bronze medals.
The nation’s medal haul was sparked by the duo of Mohammed Mohammed and Joseph Ubon who defeated Ikechukwu Iloputa and Adeniyi Olatunji 6-3, 6-0 in an all-Nigeria final at the Stade Omnisports, Lome. Ubon and Mohammed faced each other few hours later in the singles final with the former winning 6-2, 6-4.
Nigeria’s Elizabeth Garos-Pam paired Zimbabwe’s Nicole Dzenga to win gold in the doubles at the expense of Anna Kraus of Austria and Alexandra Miller-Krasilnikov of USA whom they defeated 7-5, 6-7(4) [10-7].
The tournament also featured players from the USA, Britain, India, France, Germany, Thailand and Turkey, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, among others. National junior tennis coach Mohammed Ubale said the country is eager to surpass its achievement in the first phase.
