The Home based Super Eagles on Saturday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Kaduna defeated their Ivorian counterparts, 4-1, in a crucial Africa Nations Championship qualifying match.
The Nigerian side, desperate for their maiden appearance at the championship, created specifically for home based players, was all out to get a big win against their West African neighbours.
AFCON hero, Sunday Mba, was again the star man for the Super Eagles; having a hand in all the four goals scored by Nigeria before a capacity crowd in Kaduna as he netted a brace and also provided two assists for his teammates.
Kano Pillars striker, Gambo Mohammed, placed the ball to the far right of goalkeeper Gbohouo Sylvain to register the first goal in the 14th
minute. Mba doubled the lead in the 28th minute off a power shot outside the box.
However, the smooth sailing Eagles were pegged back in the 44th minute by Coulibaliy Fousseny to make scores 2-1 after the first 45 minutes.
Nigeria got the third goal from the penalty spot, which was calmly converted by Mba, while the icing on the cake came in the 83rd minute after substitute, Ede Ifeanyi, held his nerve in the Ivorian box and scored Nigeria’s fourth goal of the day to take a healthy lead into the second leg two weeks from now in Cote d’Ivoire.
